The first time I quoted a friend a real number

A lot of the people I build for knew me before Time Theory Development existed. We were friends first. So the first time I had to send one of them a real, professional quote, the kind of number that reflects what the work is actually worth, my stomach dropped. It felt like I was taking advantage of someone I cared about.

That fear is worth naming because it is so common and so backwards. I was treating a fair price as if it were a favor being withdrawn. But charging a friend properly is not a betrayal of the friendship. Underdelivering would be. Ghosting them mid-project would be. A clear number for excellent work is the most respectful thing you can put in front of someone.

What I learned is that the discomfort was entirely mine. The clients who value you do not flinch at a number that matches the quality, they flinch at vagueness, missed deadlines, and work that does not hold up. When I finally sent the real quote, the response was not "how dare you." It was "yes, when can you start."

If you are hiding behind a small number because you are afraid of what a friend will think, you are underestimating both your work and your friend.
