Most people quit inches from the finish, and never find out

I have walked away from more than a few goals in my life. Not lazy walk-aways either, but dreams I poured real passion into, things I bled and sweat and cried over before I finally set them down. When I look back now, the hardest thing to sit with is not that I failed. It is that I will never know how close I actually was. They say most people give up on the exact thing they wanted most when they were only inches from the finish line, and the cruelest part is they never find out, because they stopped walking.

The older I get, the more I learn this the hard way, through overcoming hardship and living with the outcome of poor choices. We should never give up on something just because we decided we cannot have it. Not even when the world tells us we are too old, that it is time to hang up the mic, that the window has closed. If anything, let that be the fuel. Let the doubt and the deadlines other people set for your life push you to work that much harder to make it real.

And here is the part I keep coming back to. When you do finally succeed, you will notice you do not actually want to run back to the people who never believed in you. The ones who suddenly show up at your success claiming they always knew you had it in you. You will not feel the urge to stand in front of them and say look at me now, I made it. Because you will not need to. Your success says it for you, and it says it louder than you ever could on purpose.

That is the whole secret to silencing that kind of person: you do not. You let the work do it. The more successful you become, the more that speaks for itself, and it is always loud enough. You never have to announce trust me, I made it. The results scream it whether you meant them to or not.

So give yourself the chance to succeed. Do not quit before you even step into the ring because of the negativity, the envy, the misery-loves-company aura that hangs around so many people. That fog is not yours to carry. Let the haters be part of the fuel that drives you to the finish instead of the reason you never start.

Through all of it, stay honest in everything, stay humble, and never forget where you came from. The moment you lose sight of where you started is the moment it becomes easy to get lost and forget the path to where you are going. You can make this life into something, or you can break it into pieces. As hard as it is, that part is still up to you.
